JAIPUR: It seems that one of the reasons for the delay in the Jaipur Metro inauguration is the state government’s wish that Prime Minister Narendra Modi do the %honours.
The commercial launch of the Metro has been delayed several times. Officials are waiting for the final clearance from the commissioner of metro rail safety (CMRS). “Once CMRS gives the clearance, we shall send invitation to the Prime Minister,” said a Metro official.
The Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) sources said, “It’s expected that Modi will inaugurate the commercial run. For the event, tender worth Rs 1 crore has been invited from event management companies.”
He added that the estimated cost of the event indicated that the function would be much bigger this time. “An event being attended by the CM can be organized between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh budget.”
However, JMRC’s chairman and managing director N C Goel said, “It’s too premature to comment on this. Our priority is to procure the safety clearances. Then it will be the state government’s decision which dignitary should be invited for the inauguration.”
According to JMRC officials, request to CMRS to complete the trial run, which is mandatory before providing the final statutory certification, has been sent last week. In March, the certification process remained incomplete after CMRS was forced to leave due to paucity of time. “Our request to carry out inspection is received by CMRS. However, dates to carry out inspection have not been fixed yet.”
As there is continuous delay, speculations are rife that the JMRC and the state government are deliberately postponing the commercial run so that it could be inaugurated by the PM.
The project which started on November 13, 2010 has missed eight deadlines till date. Recently, the state unit of Congress also alleged that the Vasundhara Raje government is deliberately delaying Jaipur Metro works.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, during whose tenure the 9.25-km first phase between Mansarovar and Chandpole was conceived and largely completed, had inaugurated it in September 2013. However, inauguration done by Gehlot got flak from all quarters as it was termed as a photo opportunity before the assembly polls, which took place in December 2013. It was also said that the inauguration was done without requisite safety clearances.
“Once CMRS reach here, it will be a two-three days job to complete the certification process. There is an important bearings trial which is bit time consuming. It will be carried out on crane as bearings are fixed between metro pillars,” JMRC officials said.
